Mozambique: Transform Nutrition Programme
In 2025, the Foundation granted US$ 40,000 to the Transform Nutrition Program in Mozambique. 2025 saw the finalisation of the 5-year Transform Nutrition Program. The project started in 2020 in 4
districts and, from 2021 onwards, expanded to 8 additional districts, making a total of 12 over its life span. The idea of the project was to assist the government of Mozambique in developing the capacity to plan and manage multi- sectoral nutrition, sanitation, and hygiene programming. Efforts mainly focused on improving the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, and children less than two years of age to reduce stunting rates in Nampula province.
Main Achievements:
During its lifespan, the project made a significant contribution to expanding local community health services, enabling more people living in remote areas to access them. The project strengthened people’s ability to identify problems and devise solutions that benefit them. It transformed the way pregnant women, traditional midwives, men, teenage girls and local authorities think about nutrition, sanitation and hygiene. Approximately 3.9 million people benefited from nutrition, sanitation, and hygiene interventions through the leadership of more than 173,000 influential leaders trained by the project. At the closing ceremony, several testimonies reflected the lasting impact the project will have on the future well-being of women and young girls.
204,698 pregnant women reached with nutrition interventions. These women were encouraged by traditional midwives to attend health facilities for prenatal consultations and adopt good eating habits. This resulted in a reduction in births outside health facilities and the birth of healthy babies.
789,792 children under five reached by nutrition interventions, resulting in healthier children. This contributed to a reduction in the prevalence of chronic malnutrition from 55% to 46.7% in Nampula province.
