Mozambique: Malaria Program in Niassa and Nampula Provinces
In 2025, the HPP Foundation granted US$ 170,000 to ADPP Mozambique’s Malaria Prevention Program in Niassa and Nampula, named “Accelerating and Strengthening the Quality of Malaria Control Interventions in Mozambique.” Malaria continues to be one of the main public health problems in Mozambique, and the entire population is at risk of contracting the disease.The determinants of malaria include climate change, conflict, drug and insecticide resistance, and socio-cultural factors that influence behaviour related to the adoption of preventive measures and timely care-seeking.
According to the 2022/2023 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) the prevalence of malaria in children aged 6 to 59 months is 32 per cent.
The project aims to increase access to malaria prevention knowledge using social behaviour change communication approaches and strengthen coordination of malaria activities at the provincial and district levels.
In 2025 alone, the project reached more than 6.9 million people and supported the distribution of over 3 million treated mosquito nets. These results reflect what is possible when communities are trusted, equipped, and actively engaged.
According to the 2022/2023 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) the prevalence of malaria in children aged 6 to 59 months is 32 per cent.The dedication and commitment of community health workers, who serve on a voluntary basis, have led to measurable improvements in community knowledge of malaria prevention strategies. These volunteers have played a critical role in educating community members in their respective villages about the signs and symptoms of malaria, effective methods to prevent malaria transmission, and the importance of early testing and prompt treatment. Their ongoing efforts have contributed to greater awareness and adoption of preventive practices within the community.
Ending malaria requires concerted, collective action. In Mozambique, communities are taking the lead strengthening prevention efforts and contributing to the reduction of malaria with a common goal of elimination.
